Francis Marion Barnum was named for Francis Marion (1732-1795), a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and later Brigadier General in the South Carolina Militia during the American Revolutionary War, who became known as the "Swamp Fox" for his ability to use decoy and ambush tactics to disrupt enemy communications, capture supplies, and free prisoners.
He was the first to live on what was later called the White Mountain Ranch (about 1870), for which he traded an old grey mare. The ranch was about 160 acres.

Francis Marion Barnum, one of a family of 12 children, was born October 24, 1853 in St. Joseph, MO. When five years of age he crossed the plains with his parents and settled on a farm in Siskiyou Co., CA. As a young man he engaged in dairying and farming in Siskiyou Co. He was married to Cora E. Smith in April of 1885. To this union two daughter were born, Miss Minnie Barnum of Klamath Falls, OR, and Mrs. Jack Everett of Sacramento, CA. After his marriage he engaged in farming and dairying in Lake Co. and Klamath Co, making his home on a farm near Merrill, OR for 25 years. During this time he moved his family to Klamath Falls, OR and established a wood business. In 1918 he sold his farm and retired from active business. He resided on a small farm near Hornbrook for several years but moved to Ashland in 1925.

Fumeral services will be held from J. P. Dodge & Sons funeral chapel. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, Ashland.
