From The Day, New London, Connecticut, 29 September 2004: Killingworth — Humphrey Barnum, 79, of Burr Hill Road, Killingworth, died at home Sept. 26, 2004.
Born Oct. 25, 1924, in New York, N.Y., Mr. Barnum was a graduate of Yale University Class of 1950. He received his masters in library science from Columbia University in 1960.
He was the reference librarian at the Maui County Library, Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii, and head librarian at Waterford High School, Waterford, from 1966 until his retirement in 1994.
During World War II, Mr. Barnum served in the European Theater of Operations as part of 12th Armored Division of the U.S. Army. He was captain of the Alden Schooner Sagamore and shared his lifelong passion for sailing with his children, grandchildren and dozens of friends and colleagues.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Cleary Barnum of Killingworth; a sister, Audrey Flasch of West Hartford; a son, William Humphrey Barnum of Branford; three daughters, Evelyn Barnum of Killingworth, Mary Beth Barnum of Branford, and Sally Jane Siegler of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Vivian Jane Auer, Eric William Auer and Sarah Mary Auer all of Killingworth.
A memorial service and celebration of Mr. Barnum's life will be held at noon on Friday, Oct. 1, at St. Thomas More, The Catholic Chapel and Center at Yale University, 268 Park Street, New Haven.
