Notes for Gladys Ruth JOHNSON

From The Desert Sun, March 10, 2015: Gladys Ruth Barnum, 85, formerly of Desert Hot Springs and Rancho Mirage passed away on March 3, 2015, in Palm Desert, three years, four months and 13 days after the death of her beloved husband, George Barnum. She was born to Albert and Jennie Johnson in Milford, Illinois, on October 10, 1929. Gladys married the love of her life, George, in Kankakee, Illinois, on July 8, 1950, and they lived their life all around the country - spending time in Long Island, NY, San Antonio, TX, Titusville, FL, Honolulu, HI, and Riverside, CA (among many other locations). Gladys was a homemaker but had also worked as a legal secretary and a medical secretary and as a secretary for the State of CA before becoming a travel agent and owning and managing travel agencies in Redlands and San Bernardino, CA. She and George loved traveling, especially extended stays in Hawaii and ocean cruising, but they also went to Europe three times while their daughter was stationed in Germany. The wife of a Freemason, she was a member of the OES and was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Desert Hot Springs, CA, and actively supported her daughters and granddaughters membership in IORG. More than anything else, though, Gladys loved her husband and her extended family and her many close friends. Gladys is survived by her daughters, Gayle (Terry) Huntling of Indio, CA; Carmen Gonzalez of Deltona, FL; and Annette Koetje of De Leon Springs, FL; grandchildren, Gretchen Redewill of Indio, CA; Geoffrey Groesbeck of Indio, CA; Genney Groesbeck of Vista, CA; Kimberly (Daniel) Miles of Springfield, GA; Jennifer (Billy) Alsbrooks of Deland, FL; Tasha Quoma of Lake Mary, FL, and Tena (Dave) Anderson of Titusville, FL. She is also survived by six great-grandsons, two great-granddaughters and two nephews, two nieces, and numerous great-nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved older sisters - Edna Mae, Helen and Lily. A private memorial will be held for family only.
