The famous English author Jonathan Swift was a descendant of the younger branch of this same family. The elder branch, represented here, became extinct in the next generation.
Barnham Swift, Esq., was created a peer of Ireland in 1627, as Viscount Carlingford, in the county of Louth. His lordship died in 1634, leaving an only daughter, Mary, who was so unfortunate as to marry the thoughtless and profligate Robert Fielding, of the court of Charles II, who scattered the Swyft property to the winds. The title expired with his lordship.
