The Illinois Central Iron and Coal Mining Company was organized March 3, 1857, and their articles of association filed March 27 of the same year. The capital stock was $56,000, divided into 560 shares, incorporated for 30 years. The first directors and officers were Austin S. TUTTLE, President; Alonzo W. Nason, Secretary and Treasurer; and Orrin J. Rose. This company began mining coal in 1857.
