After serving with the Army during the Korean War, he worked one year for IBM. He then began his own carpentry business, "Roy's Service", which he maintained until he retired. He was a talented self-made builder, carpenter, plumber, and electrician, working for many prominent town residents and businesses over the years. Regretfully, as with many persons, he struggled with alcoholism throughout his life. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 74 and had been estranged from many family members at that time.
