Press and Sun-Bulletin. Binghamton, New York, 28 Jan 2016, Thu, Obituary, Page C12: Sirvent, Gladys M. Of Owego In the late hours of January 25, 2016 our dear mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend left behind her physical body and arrived at Jesus' side. Gladys Marie Sirvent (Barnum) was born October 12, 1953 to Leroy and Verna Barnum. From that day she was called by God to help those who are hurting. She also loved music. She was active in the Mello-Dears Marching Band during her high school years. The Mello Dears was a very successful marching band of the period and Gladys was there blasting her trumpet for them. She helped the hurting in many ways during her time with us, partly because she was well-educated to help the hurting. She earned her BA in nursing at Brooklyn College and earned her RN Certification at St. Vincent's Hospital school of Nursing in Manhattan with a major in geriatrics. She worked as a Registered Nurse for her entire adult life. She also used her medical training when she participated in several medical missions trips in Spanish speaking regions where her bilingual ability was valuable. She was very active in her churches. She was once a member of Groton Assembly of God and more recently at the historic First Baptist Church of Owego where she also attended as a child. Some of her recent work included leading a Vacation Bible School program while also helping to coordinate the building's extensive rehabilitation that was necessary following the unprecedented flooding of the Susquehanna River in 2011. Another vital part of her life was her six grandchildren of which she was very fond. It mattered not what the event was. Whether it be football, school plays, birthdays or holidays...she was simply delighted to see her grandchildren happy and healthy. Gladys is pre-deceased by her father Leroy Barnum and is survived by her mother, Verna Tomasetti; stepfather, Rinaldo Tomasetti; as well as her aunt, Marion Walborn (husband Dave) and her uncle, Lawrence Turner. She is also survived by her three sons. Her eldest is Daniel E. Sirvent of Costa Mesa, CA (wife Tara), their children are Gabriel, Jasmine, Jericho and Kelilah. Her second son is Joseph A. Sirvent of , Groton, NY (wife Wendy), their children are Hart and Anthony. Her youngest is Matthew L. Sirvent of Trumansburg, NY. She is also survived by her siblings, Stephen Barnum (Cliff Tynes) Gregory Barnum (Sarah Orsini), Michael Barnum (Gregory Giacovelli) Linda Reed (Barnum) and Russ Baker, Jeff Barnum (Wife: Christy), Terry Barnum (Marc Mazzei). Family and friends are invited to visit at Richards Funeral Home, Rte. 17c West, Owego, NY on Saturday January 30, 2016 from 10:00am E until 12:00 Noon. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 Noon with Rev. Bill Kohler, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Owego officiating. In lieu of flowers, we would ask that donations be sent to the First Baptist Church of Owego to assist the buildings , continued rehabilitation that Gladys worked so hard for this far.
