Lucretia Hungerford Barnum died on September 26, 1925 at Morrison, Whiteside County, Illinois (Illinois Death Index). From the Sterling Daily Gazette, Sterling, Illinois, September 28, 1925: Mrs. Lucretia Barnum, one of the oldest residents of the city, passed away at 1:15 o’clock Saturday (September 26, 1925) afternoon at the home of her son, F. C. Barnum with whom she had resided for a number of years. The final summons came as a blessed release.
Lucretia Hungerford was born January 17, 1833 in Swanton, Vermont. Her early life was spent in the east where she was married to Merritt F. Barnum May 17, 1859 at Angelica, New York. Their home was made at that place and at Smethport, Pa. until 1865 when they came to the vicinity of Morrison where she had since resided continuously with the exception of a short period spent in Michigan. The children who came into the home are David M., Carrie E. (who died in infancy), Fred C., Frank W., and Blanche A. Mr. Barnum’s death occurred December 25, 1888. For a period of nine years previous to that time he had been superintendent of the County Farm...Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Barnum has made her home with her children… Mrs. Barnum is the last survivor of a large family in the old home circle and is survived of her own kindred by three sons, David M. and Fred C. of this city and Rev. Frank W. Barnum of Rogers Park and one daughter, Mrs. Blanche Steele of Dexter,Missouri. She also leaves four grandchildren. Interment is in Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison, Illinois.
