A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname

Notes for Thomas INWOOD

In his will, dated 1586, Thomas Inwood mentioned Francis Barnham as the husband of his daughter Jane.

Thomas had three wives. The name of his first wife, who was born about 1520 and died about 1570, is not known. Neither the name nor any other information is known about his second wife. The given name of his third wife was Joane; she died about June 1589. It is not known which of the three wives was the mother of his children.

Researcher Rosemary Simons has concluded that Joane, maiden name unknown, was probably not the mother of any of them. She had previously been married to Garret Toolarge and had several children by him, who are mentioned in her will dated 1589 and also in Thomas' will. Joane's will does not mention any children of hers fathered by Thomas. Although that is not in itself a reason to believe that there were none but seems indicative. Also, she worries in her will about her step-son Thomas (called her son-in-law, in the will), the son of her late husband, failing to carry out the wishes expressed in her late husband's will about the money to be bequeathed to the Toolarge children.

Thomas is listed as 'of Weybridge'. The town of Weybridge is in Surrey. The river Wey, over which the named bridge passes, rises in Hampshire, near Alton, and eventually flows into the Thames.

There is a brass in Saint James Weybridge, bearing the date 1586, in memory of Thomas Inwood, his 3 wives and children. This brass shows in some respects a similarity to the Selwyn brasses and may have been engraved by the same hand.
