Daniel served in the US Army during WWI, as a private in Company A, 115th Engineers. He was honorably discharged on 10 July 1919.

Daniel G. Barnum died of a carcinoma of the stomach. His death certificate (with his father as informant) states that he was an an oil operator, usual residence Tampico Mexico. His parents were listed as Daniel P. Barnum, born in New York, and Anne F. Dobbins, born Illinois. His passport applications confirm his birthdate. Interment was listed as Roselawn Cemetery, no location given. This was most likely the Roselawn Memorial Park in San Antonio.
From the San Antonio Light, March 26, 1928: Daniel G. Barnum died at a local hospital at 2 AM Monday March 26. Mr. Barnum was an oil operator from Tampico, Mexico and had been in San Antonio for the past 17 days. Survived by his wife Mrs. Maria Barnum of Tampico, father Daniel P. Barnum also of Tampico; one brother Earl T. Barnum of Los Angeles, and one sister Mrs. J. D. McMaster also of Los Angeles. Interment Roselawn Cemetery.
