He was called “Frederick Cleveland Barnum” on his World War I draft registration but was generally known as Fred C. Barnum. He registered for the draft on the same day as his brother Frank J. Barnum.

From the Daily Messenger, Canandaigua, NY, February 8, 1954, p. 3: Fred C. Barnum, 80, Canandaigua RD 5, died unexpectedly yesterday, February 7, 1954. He was born October 31, 1873, the son of the late William M. and Martha Hyde Barnum, in the town of Canandaigua and was a life-long resident of that area. He was the husband of the late Ida Mae Goff Barnum. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Donald C. Read, Canandaigua RD 5; two sons, F. Martin and James F. both of Canandaigua RD 5; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Burial Pine Bank Cemetery.
