From the Otsego Farmer, Cooperstown, NY, May 6, 1910: Death has again taken from Middlefield Centre, one of the best known and highly esteemed women in that community, one who was noted for her hospitality and ever ready sympathy. She was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Almira (Chase) Barnum. She was born near Middlefield Centre, April 9, 1846, and her entire life was spent in that vicinity and for about fifty years she resided in the home where she passed away at the of day May 2, 1910, after a short illness of grip followed by pneumonia and other complications. For many years Miss Barnum acted as organist for the church, with which she united thirty-three years ago. She was also a member of all the organizations of the church, and was teacher in the primary department of the Sunday school for several years, until home duties became too pressing, then with cheerful resignation she took up the care of her mother, who was an invalid for several years and to whom she gave untiring devotion until less than a year ago she answered the summons to come up higher. Since, then her health which had never been very good seemed to improve. A few days of intense, suffering brought the close of a life that will long be remembered by the entire community. Miss Barnum attended the Academy at Ames where she formed some lasting ties of friendship. She was a member of Otsego Chapter D.A.R. of Cooperstown. She is survived by three brothers, Adelbert C., with whom she resided, James W. and Sylvester W. Barnum of Cherry Valley, and one sister, Mrs. Homer Hannah of Middlefield Centre; three nieces, Mrs. William Beattie and Mrs. N. P. Willis of Cooperstown and Miss Myra D. Barnum of Cherry Valley; one nephew, Clarence Davidson of Cooperstown. Interment was in the village cemetery.
