From the Otsego Farmer, September 16, 1921: Alverna M. Barnum, wife of Homer Hannah, passed away at eight o'clock, Thursday morning, September 8, 1921, after an illness of a little more than three months, during which she was tenderly cared for by her devoted husband and trained help, who did everything possible to keep her with them but to no avail. Mrs. Hannah who was a daughter of the late Sylvester W. and Almira Chase Barnum was born near this place, February 14, 1849. When she was about six years old, her parents bought the now well known Barnum homestead where she resided until her marriage to Homer Hannah which took place March 30, 1892. Since then she has lived in and near this village, where she has many warm friends who extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved husband and relatives. Mrs. Hannah united with the church several years ago when a young woman and had always been prominent as a leader in all social affairs in the church and community, and nothing gave her greater pleasure than entertaining her friends. She was a well read and progressive woman and it can be well said of her that she was seventy-two years young.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two brothers, J. W., and S. W. Barnum, both attorneys-at-law in Cherry Valley one nephew, Clarence Davidson of Cooperstown, three nieces, Mrs. William Beattie of Charlotte, North Carolina, Mrs. N. P. Willis of Cooperstown, and Mrs. Howard Johnson of East Lansing, Michigan, and several more distant relatives. The funeral was held at her late home Saturday afternoon, and was largely attended. The service was conducted by the Rev. J. C. Rankin. She was laid at rest in the village cemetery amid a profusion of beautiful flowers.
