Alexander was a farmer at the time that Wisconsin became a state (1848). A certificate that he received testifies to that fact. The story is also told that in his later years he owned a tavern at the northeast corner of Highway 10 and Highway 114 in Calumet County, Wisconsin and that he was often drunk and quite mean tempered.
