A One-Name Study
for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Notes for Catherine POKOUPEE DIT RENAUD
In the Prairie du Chien Baptisms for 1817 she is identified as "May 6, 1817, Catherine, a Fox woman, about 50 years old. Godfather Mathieu Saucier, Godmother, Maria Souligni." Pokoupee is almost certainly her Indian name and Renaud is French for Fox.
She is sometimes shown as a Fox or Sac woman but most often as half Fox.
Catherine was baptized at Saint Gabriel's Catholic Church. Wisconsin remained a territory of the United States from the end of the War of 1812 until it was admitted to the Union as the 30th state on 29 May 1848.
