From the Santa Barbara News-Press, September 3, 2009: Helen J. Thwing, 84, died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, August 25, 2009. She was born in Pasadena, CA on December 20, 1924 to Starr H. and Mary J. (Metcalf) Barnum. She was united in marriage to Julian Dwaine Thwing on September 2, 1945 and they moved to Santa Barbara in 1947 where they raised their family. In 1988 they moved to Paso Robles to spend their retirement years and recently returned to Santa Barbara. Helen worked at La Cumbre Junior High Library while raising her family, was a member of PEO, and an avid tennis player. Her survivors include her husband, Julian Dwaine Thwing of Santa Barbara, a daughter, Nancy (Ed) Giorgi of Hemingford, NE, two sons - Randy (Lisa) Thwing of Santa Barbara, CA, Gary (Pat) Thwing of Watsonville, CA - seven grandchildren, Kelly (Ethan) Rumrill of Fairfax, VA, Kerry Thwing of Watsonville, CA, Starr Giorgi of Chadron, NE, Shaina (Kenny) Tucker of Tucson, AZ, Sara Thwing, Annie Thwing and Drew Thwing all of Santa Barbara, CA, two soon-to-be great-grandchildren, and a sister, June (Max) Richie of North Fork, CA. Private services were held at Santa Barbara Cemetery on August 28, 2009.
