Gerald John Barnum sold merchandise for Richard L. Miles prior to enlisting in the Canadian Army. Richard was a barber also and later ran a Second Hand store in Grand Forks. Gerald sold this merchandise for Richard Miles while the Kettle Valley Railroad was being constructed. Miles had relocated to Carmi, British Columbia and set up a store to sell goods to the railroad construction camps along the line. Later, when Gerald enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1916, his forwarding address was in c/o of someone in Hedley, B.C. and Gerald's profession was listed as barber. His next of kin was his mother, Ida l. Miles, living in Carmi, B.C.
