Miles had relocated to Carmi, British Columbia and set up a store to sell goods to the railroad construction camps along the line. Later, when Gerald enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1916, his forwarding address was in c/o of someone in Hedley, B.C. and Gerald's profession was listed as barber. His next of kin was his mother, Ida l. Miles, living in Carmi, B.C.
