George Westcott Murray was the only child of Miriam Lola Barnum, born to her and George Rabold Murray on 12 March 1926. Family lore says that George Rabold left his wife either shortly before or shortly after George Westcott was born. During the Great Depression, when George Westcott Barnum was five years old, his mother took him to the Methodist Home for Children in Philadelphia, where he was raised but not put up for adoption. He remembered that his mother visited on weekends – and so did various cousins, aunts and uncles. It seems that he had a large extended family and his daughter has photographs of them at the beach, etc. When George was 17, he left to work in the shipyards and he eventually joined the Air Force.
