A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Leonard married Roena Hoffint, a daughter of Silas and Sylvia Hoffint. They had a daughter, Sila Barnum, born about 1854. Roena died 17 November 1862, at the age of 36 years, 1 month and 20 days and is buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Newstead, Erie, New York. Leonard later married Jane H. unknown of Scotland [see the 1870 census].
In the 1880 census Leonard and his wife Jane had a Cora Barnum, age 15, niece, living with them. This would have been Calvin's daughter. She probably married or died in New York and there are no records for her in Michigan after the 1870 census.
The 1830 census for Amherst, Erie County, New York shows Asa Boland 20-30 with one male under 5 (probably Edward), one female under 5 (name not known) and one female 20-30 (probably Joshua's daughter). They were living one house away from Joshua. The 1820 census for Holland, Niagara County, New York, shows Joshua and family and the 1840 census shows Joshua in Newstead, Erie County, New York. Joshua always lived in the same place and only the name of that place changed.

(Thus, Leonard had another wife besides Rowena and Jane).
The 1850 census shows Leonard, aged 27, living in the household of Silas Huffcut, with (among others) his daughter but Leonard and Rowena were not married yet. Thus, his marriage to Rowena was between 1850 and 1855. The 1855 and 1860 censuses shows Leonard married to Rowena and the 1865 and 1870 censuses show him married to Jane H. It appears that his first marriage was probably before that to Rowena and his third marriage (to Jane) was about 1863-64, after the death of Rowena. As noted above, she was previously married. Since they had a daughter one year old in 1855, they were likely married about 1853.
