Notes for Levi Russell BARNUM

From the Delphos Republican, Delphos, Kansas, October 18, 1929: Levi Russell Barnum was born in Clayton Co., Iowa, Nov. 11, 1855, and died at Delphos, Kansas, Oct. 12, 1929, aged 73 years, 11 months and 1 day. He came to Kansas in 1874 and lived on the farm until 1909 when he moved to Delphos, where he lived until his death. On Sept. 23, 1880, he was married to Etta Rolph. To this union two sons were born, Cecil of Leon, Iowa and Ray of Atoka, Okla. He is survived by his widow and two sons, four half brothers and two half sisters, as follows: Frank Slater, of Delphos; Ernest Slater of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Addie Leach, Beloit, Kansas; Plin Slater and John Slater of Rosedale, Kansas; and Mrs. Geo. Kent of Muskogee, Okla. Lee Barnum, as he was familiarly known, was of an unassuming disposition. His habits were truly temperate, never having used liquor or tobacco in any form. The funeral service was held at the M.E. church Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Vielguth. Burial was in Delphos Cemetery.

In another column: Four Deaths in Week. From last Thursday morning – Monday afternoon, death visited the Delphos community four times. .…On Saturday evening, about eleven o'clock, Lee Barnum was stricken with paralysis and died with in an hour. He came downtown and was taken home by friends when the stroke came. Mr. and Mrs. Barnum had long been residents of the Delphos community, having lived east of town on a farm for years, and later moving to Delphos, where Mr. Barnum carpentered and worked at other work. He was active, taking a lively interest in all the happenings of the community, and his death, while coming at the age of 73 years, seems most untimely. He leaves his widow and two sons of the immediate family.
