Notes for Julia SPRAGUE


Julia, the fourth daughter and fourth of six children of Chandler Sprague (1812-1870) and Rhoda Shaw (1809-) was born on 21 November 1847 at Brockton, Massachusetts. Julia was married twice. She married 1) Joseph Winchester Robinson, the son of Henry Winchester and Elizabeth (Hapgood) Robinson on 14 April 1869 at North Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Julia and Joseph had four children:
1. Elizabeth Sprague Robinson (b. 13 Apr 1871; d. 28 Jul 1872 No. Bridgewater, MA),
2. Alma Sprague Robinson (b. 24 Dec 1873; d. 1 Oct 1955, Los Angeles, CA), m. 21 Jun 1898 at Los Angeles, CA, John Keck Urmston (1858-1923)
3. Louie Chandler Robinson (b. 1876; d. 1964), m. 27 May 1896 at Los Angeles, CA, William Lucas Valentine (1870-1942)
4. Henry Winchester "Harry" Robinson (b. 23 Oct 1878, Waltham, MA; d. 19 Sep 1932, Los Angeles, CA), m. 16 Nov 1903 at Los Angeles, CA, Virginia Dryden (1877-1977)
Julia, Joseph and their family moved from Waltham, Massachusetts to Los Angeles, California in 1882 were he founded the "Boston Dry Goods Store." Upon his early death at age 45 years, Joseph's father continued the business under the name J.W Robinson & Co.
Julia married 2) Edward Theron Barnum (1851-1905), the son of Allan S. and Mary (Hepburn) Barnum on 1 September 1898 at Manhattan, New York City, New York. There were no children from this union.
Julia Ann (Sprague) Robinson-Barnum died on 12 July 1911 in her 62nd year at Los Angeles, California. She is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California.
