From the Stanwood Camano News, Tuesday, June 16, 2015: Long-time Camano Island resident Marie Barnum passed away May 7, 2015 from complications of a fall. She was 103. Born Dec. 18, 1911 in Mulvihill, Manitoba (north of Winnipeg), the family moved when Marie was about 11 to Portland, Ore. Later, she met and married Robert Barnum, the son of a Camano Island pioneer family. They raised their family in north Seattle and Marie worked as a waitress at the iconic Frederick & Nelson Tea Room downtown Seattle. She and Bob retired to Camano Island in 1952 after Bob built a home on the family homestead (founded in 1904). Some local maps still reference Barnum Point. Her loves in life included camping and hiking in the Cascades and spending time on Camano. Marie spent countless hours in her garden, tending her many flowers as well as a large vegetable garden. She enjoyed baking, anyone who ate her bread was lucky. She loved to read and write, and even attended creative writing and poetry classes at the Camano Senior Center. Traveling was magical to Marie, especially trips with family members. She was especially fond of cruising. She journaled and photographed virtually all of her travels and has left behind a wonderful narration of her life. Marie leaves behind her children Carolin and Robert (Geri); five grandchildren: Barbara (Tod) Brueske, Michael (Lisa) Dilorenzo, Debra (Randy) Jacobsen, David (Leisa) Barnum and Susan (Hugh) Sanderson; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and so many special friends like the Nielsons and Eisenbergs of Camano Island.Memorial services will be held August 27 at 1 p.m. in the Josephine Sunset Home Chapel.
