From The Berkshire Eagle, Pittsfield, MA - June 18, 2000: Great Barrington -- Marie A. Barnum, 82, of 14 Wyantenuck St., Housatonic, died Saturday at home. Born in Great Barrington on Jan. 17, 1918, daughter of Louis H. and Sadie Antous Ely, she attended local schools. She moved to Housatonic 40 years ago. Mrs. Barnum was employed by GE in several departments for more than 30 years. She retired in 1992, after the death of her sister Helen Scarbro, to operate the family-run business, Ely's Market, a local landmark for almost 100 years. She was a communicant of Corpus Christi Church in Housatonic and enjoyed traveling to various states and Europe. She and her husband, Harold "Porky" Barnum, would have celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on Sept. 25. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Louis Ely of Stephentown, N.Y.; a daughter, Susan L. Fink of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; a brother, Edward L. Ely of Great Barrington, and two grandchildren. Burial in St. Peter's Cemetery, Great Barrington.
