From the Putnam County Courier, Carmel, NY, Friday, August 15, 1930: Lewis G. Pugsley, Sr., one of the oldest residents of Patterson, died at his home there Thursday evening, August 14, 1930, in his 90th year, following an illness of four weeks of heart trouble and advanced age. Mr. Pugsley had been enjoying remarkably good health and had been unusually active for a man of his age until a month ago when he suffered from the intense heat wave. His heart was affected by it and he failed gradually during the intervening weeks until death came last night. Mr. Pugsley was a life-long resident of Patterson and was numbered among the representative citizens of that locality and like many of the leading men of the county came of pioneer stock. As a prominent merchant and farmer he has been an influential factor in business circles, while as a loyal citizen he was closely identified with local affairs for many years. He was born in Patterson March 3, 1841, where his father, Alfred, was born in 1810. He was one of a family of seven children born to Alfred and Antoinette Gregory Pugsley and his education was acquired in the common schools of that town. At the age of twelve he began clerking in a store, in which he continued for some time, and in 1863 he commenced business at Patterson, in partnership with his brother Edgar. This business prospered, and a few years later he took Edson Sloat as a partner, and continued three or four years when he sold his interest to Orson W. Sloat, who had been with them as clerk for some time.
In 1872, Mr. Pugsley was appointed postmaster at Patterson and held that position for thirteen years, performing his duties with ability and faithfulness. He had always been a Republican in politics, and took great interest in public questions. In fraternal work he was also active in his younger days as a member of Patterson Lodge No. 173, I.O.O.F., and had been through all the chairs. On November 2, 1870, Mr. Pugsley married Miss Josephine Barnum, a daughter of George and Susan Barnum, of New Fairfield, Conn., who survives him with six children: Mrs. Wm. O. Taylor, Lewis G. Pugsley, Jr., Mrs. Towner Kent, Sterling Pugsley, Miss Minnie B. Pugsley, and Edgar A. Pugsley, all of Patterson. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Abram D. Wing, of. Patterson. Interment will be made in the family plot in the Maple Avenue cemetery.
