A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname

Notes for Anna Eliza BURNHAM

The case of Stephen Baker Barnum, the patriarch of this family, is unique in that he apparently changed the spelling of his surname to Burnham later in life. That change is particularly interesting since the two surnames are quite distinct in the historical record and no other connection has been found between them.

Anna Eliza arrived in Sullivan County about 1831.

The spelling of her father's name is Barnum on her Death Certificate.

Her Republican Watchman obituary refers to her brother Beekman T. Burnham and sisters Mrs. Moses Schoonmaker (Catherine) and Carolina Baker.

Her cause of death was a Cerebral Embolism. She was buried in the North Settlement (Smith Family) Cemetery.
