Summarized from Evanston Review of March 18, 1999: Dr. David Ritch Barnum, 82, died Feb. 13, 1999 in Northfield, Illinois. Dr. Barnum, who was born Evanston, Illinois, was a 1934 graduate of Evanston Township High School, where his father served as assistant principal from 1927 to 1951. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1938 from DePauw University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the Men's Glee Club. He went on to receive medical degrees from Northwestern University Medical School in 1943.
During World War II, Dr. Barnum served three years in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army in the China Theater. He was a member of the Burma Mission, Company D, 13th Mountain Medical Battalion, completing his military service with the rank of major. After the war, he did additional medical training and received a Master of Science degree in physiology from Northwestern.
He joined Evanston Northwestern Healthcare in 1951 and was a staff physician until his retirement in 1993. At the same time, he was an associate in medicine at Northwestern University Medical School.
Dr. Barnum was a member of the American Federation for Clinical Research and the Chicago Society of Internal Medicine; a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Chest Physicians; and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Heart Association and The Institute of Medicine of Chicago. He was recently preceded in death by his wife, Marjory (nee Church) Barnum.
Survivors include four stepdaughters and a sister, Marion Barnum Ingersoll of Seattle, and three step-grandchildren.
