He was a member of the Burma Mission, Company D, 13th Mountain Medical Battalion, completing his military service with the rank of major. After the war, he did additional medical training and received a Master of Science degree in physiology from Northwestern.
He joined Evanston Northwestern Healthcare in 1951 and was a staff physician until his retirement in 1993. At the same time, he was an associate in medicine at Northwestern University Medical School.
Dr. Barnum was a member of the American Federation for Clinical Research and the Chicago Society of Internal Medicine; a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Chest Physicians; and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Heart Association and The Institute of Medicine of Chicago. He was recently preceded in death by his wife, Marjory (nee Church) Barnum.
Survivors include four stepdaughters and a sister, Marion Barnum Ingersoll of Seattle, and three step-grandchildren.
