From the Chicago Tribune, November 9, 1998: Marjory Church Barnum, 69, a volunteer and member of the politically influential Church family in Evanston, died Wednesday in Evanston Hospital. A lifelong volunteer for myriad local groups, Mrs. Barnum of Northfield was the daughter of the late U.S. Rep. Ralph E. Church and the late U.S. Rep. Marguerite Stitt Church, who, at the time, was Illinois' only woman in Congress. Born in Evanston in 1929, Mrs. Barnum spent her childhood in the Chicago area and in Washington, D.C., said her daughter Grace Wood. After graduating from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, Mrs. Barnum became interested in volunteer work while in postwar Europe, aiding students and young people who had lost their parents or were political refugees. After coming back to the U.S., she received a master's degree from Northwestern University. She then volunteered for the Junior League of Chicago and was its president in the early 1960s. She also worked with the board of the Chicago Adler Planetarium and the Women's Board of the University of Chicago. "She was always looking forward, and she was a tremendous role model," Wood said. "She had a tremendous insight to what needed to be done." Mrs. Barnum also worked as a real estate agent, first for Hokanson & Jenks in Evanston, and later with Chamber & Cross in Winnetka. She also is survived by her husband, David R. Barnum; three daughters, Courtenay Wood, Carol Risinger and Catherine M. Wood; two brothers, Ralph E. Church Jr. and William S. Church; and three grandchildren.
