In the 1881 Census, Burton Barnham was listed as a general labourer born in Knottingley; in the 1871 census he was incorrectly listed as born in Wisbeach. Burton was married in Huddersfield in 1883 to Sarah Ann Dawson. Burton and Sarah Ann migrated to the United States about 1885. In the 1895 and 1900 censuses they were enumerated in Duluth, Minnesota. Burton was naturalized as a US citizen in the County Court at Saint Louis in 1897. In the 1920 census, Burton was living in Houghton, Michigan with his second wife, Florence L Barnham (nee Scott), also English, whom he married in 1917, and her daughter Gwendoline Scott. It is known that Burton and Florence traveled to England, returning to the US on the SS Olympic, which sailed from Southampton on 22 March 1922 and arrived in New York on 29 March 1922. Their address on the ship's manifest was shown as Calumet, Michigan. Burton and Florence traveled to England at least once more, on the White Star Line's ship Laurentic, which departed from Montreal, Quebec, and arrived in Liverpool on 22 May 1928.
