They had three children: Arthur, Herbert and Phoebe. Gertrude Schmidt was born May 8, 1897 and died February 13, 1993 (SSDI). John M. Barnum and his wife Gertrude are buried in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer, New York. (findagrave.com). Also buried there is Phoebe VanVorst, their daughter. The family of John M. Barnum is enumerated in the 1930 Census in German Flatts, Ilion Village, Herkimer County, NY: John 35, Gertrude 32, Arthur 12, Herbert 8, and Phoebe 6. All were born in New York but Herbert, who was listed as being born in Colorado.
From The Observer-Dispatch, Utica, NY, July 27, 1957: Ilion - John Barnum, 62, died in Burlington, Vermont, July 26, after a long illness. He had been visiting relatives in Burlington for the last two weeks. Mr. Barnum was born in Utica on October 11, 1894, son of Frederick and Nettie Marsden Barnum. He married Gertrude Schmidt in Utica November 25, 1915 and had been a resident of Ilion since. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Jack VanVorst, Burlington, Vermont; two sons, Arthur, Newington, Connecticut and Herbert, Savannah, Georgia; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Board, Utica; three brothers, Robert, Dunedin, Florida, and Charles and Roy, Utica.
