The 1850 census shows Harrison Barnum, aged 6, living with his father David, aged 41, a carpenter, in Plymouth. His mother died in 1844. It appears that he was later adopted. He was born in Lyon, Mi. On Aug 9 1862, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the army at Lyon Mi.Co. I, 22nd Michigan Infantry. He was described as 5’11 3/4” tall with a light complexion, blue eyes and sandy hair. When he enlisted his occupation was a farmer. He was discharged in Detroit for disability on April 15, 1863. His disability is listed as hepatization of the lungs, the sequel of pneumonia. On July 19, 1864 an examining surgeon said, “This is a case of tuberculated lungs produced by protracted typhoid pneumonia. Applicant is able to perform a little light labour.” And that the disability arose in the line of duty. He applied for an invalid pension on March 13, 1864. At that time he related the following story: “I was taken sick at Lexington Kentucky in the month of December 1862 with Typhoid fever & lung disease. Remained there in the hospital til the first of April next when I was sent to Detroit and was there discharged for Hepatization of the Lungs. That from the time I was taken sick until the present time by reason of such disease I have been unable to do any labor and some of the time since my discharge I have been confined to the house and to my bed by reason of such disease. It has incapacitated me from obtaining a living by my own labor and I am dependant upon the kindness & charity of my friends. My former occupation was that of a farmer.” At the time of this application he was listed as 21 years old and a resident of Summit Jackson County in the state of Michigan. William K. Gibson of Jackson Mi was assigned as his attorney. On April 21 1891, his mother (by adoption) Maria H. Lord, filed for his pension saying, "(He) died from results of disabilities incurred in the service of the U.S. on or about the 19th day of March 1865.” She also claimed “that she was partly dependent upon said son for support that the mother of said son died at Northville, Mi in 1844.” He is buried in the Chubb Road Cemetery in Lyon Township, Oakland County, Michigan and is found on the Michigan Veterans of the Civil War Burial Sites. Maria H. Lord (Lard) was married to Orlando Lord in November of 1850 at Northville, Mi. Her address at the time of this claim was listed as 720 East 8th, Erie, Pa. It appears that his mother applied for his pension 26 years after he died. We have found no evidence of any siblings or of a marriage or children. We had some information that Harrison’s guardian Joel Backwith filed for an invalid’s pension on April 18,1864 application #44199 certificate #32156. This would have been a month after Harrison applied. We have found nothing to substantiate this information. Sources: John Heseltine, Portland, Maine. RootswebAncestry.comArchives, Washington, D.C.
