From the Utica Observer Dispatch, October 7, 2014: Whitesboro, New York - Richard G. Barnum, 66, of Whitesboro, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 5, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 2, 1948, in Utica, a son of the late Kenneth and Helen (Gifford) Barnum. He was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Glens Falls; he received his BA from Siena College in 1970 and his Masters Degree from College of St. Rose in 1976.
On June 18, 1977, at St. Paul's Church in Whitesboro, he was united in marriage to Wendy Moran, a blessed union of over 37 years. He began his career with Central New York DSO in 1977, retiring in 2005. He was a tireless advocate dedicated to helping individuals with developmental disabilities achieve their life goals and fulfill their dreams. During his retirement, he served on the board of ARC and also served as a consultant for the Sitrin Rehabilitation Center. At the age of 40, Dick was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. He faced his blindness with determination in hope that they would find a cure for the disease and someday he would see again. When his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, he worked diligently to help establish the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. He went on to serve as board President, unaware that someday he would be affected by this disability himself.
Dick is survived by his wife, Wendy; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mandy and Jeff Tack, and a granddaughter, Avery, all of Baldwinsville, and Brittany Barnum, of Whitesboro, and soon to be son-in-law, David Praznik and his daughter, Kaitlyn. He also leaves his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Edith and Rod Rosebrook, of Queensbury, NY; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Debby Tomasello, of Baldwinsville, Kathy Beaver and her husband, Tad, of Oriskany, Jennifer Pisegna and her husband, Matt, of Liverpool, and Thomas Moran, of Utica; his nieces and a nephew, Angelica, Lisa, Craig, Olivia, Savannah, Quinlyn and Marissa; his aunts and uncles, Quint and Jean Barry, of Clinton, and Doug and Helen Barnum, of Ocala, FL; also his close friends, Ned and Sue Larkin, of Rochester, and Larry Hooks, of Utica. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, Russell Moran, and a brother-in-law, Sonny Tomasello.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in New Hartford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
