From The Day, South Burlington, Vermont, 17 June 2014 - H. Gardiner Barnum, 80, of South Burlington, Vt., died at home Wednesday, June 11, 2014, following a long illness.
He was born in New London, May 10, 1934, son of the late Horace and Mildred F. Barnum. He attended the former Bulkeley School in New London and was a graduate of the Taft School, Middlebury College, and the University of Chicago, where he received a Ph.D in geography. He taught for many years at the University of Vermont.
He is survived by his wife, the former Erika Dasler of Heilbronn, Germany, and their children, Susan and her husband, Dane Nolan, and their children, Tess, Jon, and Katherine of Salt Lake City, Utah; Sarah and her husband, Peter Kerouac, and their son, Luc of Epsom, N.H.; and Samuel and his wife, Erin, and their children, Izaak and Silas of Somerville, Mass. Also surviving are his sister, Charlotte and her husband, Duncan Olding, of Groton; his brother, Charles Barnum and his wife, Florence, of Brookfield, Vt.; a niece and several nephews; grand nieces and grand nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Cynthia Allyn of Groton.
