From the Otsego Farmer, Friday, December 3, 1926: Another one of Cooperstown’s honored citizens passed into Life Eternal at about 9 o'clock Sunday night at Thanksgiving Hospital when Robert Laidler Davidson answered the final summons. Mr. Davidson's last illness dated from October 29th when he was taken to the hospital where he gradually failed until the end despite the utmost that medical skill and nursing could offer.
Mr. Davidson was the son of Robert and Catharine (Laidler) Davidson who came to this country from Scotland and settled first in Burlington, Otsego County. It is interesting in this connection to note that upon returning to this country after a visiting his native land Mr. Davidson, the father, brought with him the first Cheviot sheep ever imported into America forming the advance guard of that important breed in the United States. Later the family moved to this locality and Robert Laidler was born March 17, 1842. Mr. Davidson married Jannette (Pierce) Barnum in 1874 and her death occurred April 5, 1895. He is survived by a niece; Mrs. John Smith, a nephew, James R. Davidson, one step-daughter, Mrs. Almeda B. Caney, and one step-son, Linus M. Barnum, all of Cooperstown. The funeral was held at the house, Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock the Rev. Edward C. Petrie officiating. Interment at Lakewood Cemetery.
