Notes for Donald A. BARNUM

From the Syracuse Post Standard, April 11, 2011: Donald Arthur Barnum, 88, of Morgantown, WV, has joined his beloved Dot on Saturday, April 2, 2011. Don was born in Utica, NY, on March 30, 1923, son of the late Arthur Marsden Barnum and Gertrude May McMahon Barnum. Don graduated from Utica Free Academy and attended the University of Florida. He proudly served his country in World War II with the United States Army. He enlisted in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was decorated with four medals, including the World War II Victory Medal. Before his retirement he worked at Alfred Paull Casualty/General Accident Insurance in Wheeling, WV, for 20 years. He was an active hockey referee for the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association. He retired in 1983 and settled in Morgantown after traveling the country via motor home for several years. Family was the most important focus in his life, whether it was more recently spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, family dinners or just watching hockey and golf together, or in his younger days playing golf, tennis, horseshoes and pitch. He and Dot spent many happy days in the Adirondacks at the family camp. Only he knows what truly went on at Hunting Camp every year, but we are left with many wild stories to recount. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was well-spoken, never quick to judge, was very supportive and wise and respected by many. He will be greatly missed by us, but we know that he is finally at peace and his heart is complete once again. Don is survived by his son Steve (wife Barbara); daughter Nancee Devlin (husband Edd); son Chris (wife Kim); his brothers Alan (wife Ann) of Old Forge, NY, and Ted (wife Janice) of Rome, NY; and sister-in-law Alice Dixon of Minoa, NY. Grampy is also survived by seven grandchildren, Brad Barnum (wife Staci) of Carmichaels, PA, Shaye Heiskell (husband Ryan) of Georgetown, SC, Ed Devlin of NYC, NY, Patrick Devlin, Christopher Devlin, Brian Barnum and Brooke Barnum; and 13 great-grandchildren, Lillie Barnum, Marshall, Tug and Phinn Heiskell, Lizzie, Reagan and Cooper Haines, Tyler, Kelsey and Zachary Haines, and Myles, Connor and Emelia Heiskell; a daughter-in-law, Shauna Sterle; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his extended family, Dave and Gloria Sullivan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Dorothy, to whom he was married for 62 years, and his sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Harold Luther. Burial was held Wednesday, April 6, at WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown, WV, with full military honors.
