Notes for James Edward BARNUM


From the North County Times, San Diego, CA, May 30, 2010: Oceanside -- James Edward Barnum was born in Crawford, Nebraska on March 24, 1933 to Donald Thomas and Angie Ross Barnum. He died of a tragic accidental drowning in the San Diego Bay Yacht Harbor on April 29, 2010. Jim was a man of great strength, courage and accomplishment. He lived a full, adventurous, active life and used his many talents, skills and abilities in pursuing numerous interests. At Crawford High School, Jim earned four letters in each of the three major sports-football, basketball and track. Jim won the Nebraska State Championship Prep School hurdles with first place honors. The school is still giving out the 'James Barnum Award' for track. Jim received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Geology at the University of Wyoming. During his university years, Jim continued to be a star hurdler. He later received his Masters of Science Degree in Cinema at the University of Southern California where he was sent by the Army. After graduating from the University of Wyoming, Jim joined the U. S. Army and had a very distinguished military career. During his military service Jim held significant senior officer and command positions. Jim served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a Signal Senior Advisor Officer to the Vietnam Signal School and Radio Officer and also held positions as Command Center Response Plotting Officer and Instructional Technology Officer. Jim was stationed at the Pentagon as a Security and Communications Officer for the Office of the Chief of Information. While serving in Taiwan, Jim held various command positions as a Fixed Tele-Communications Officer. During his military service, Jim worked with the Navy ashore and on submarines with classified weapons. He also became an official U. S. Army Photographer and completed classified assignments as a Photojournalist. After serving his country honorably for 21 years, he retired as a Major. Jim had a passion for sailing and became an avid sailor. While stationed in Taiwan, he had a boat built and sailed from Taiwan to Yokosuka, Japan and on to Honolulu with his son and 2 crew members. Jim later sailed from Honolulu to San Diego and back to Honolulu single-handed on his Trimaran. Jim also loved to fly and enjoyed flying his Beechcraft Staggerwing Airplane to various parts of the country. Jim owned a ranch in Crawford, Nebraska and found that experience very rewarding as well as being a Ham Radio Operator. Jim was a member of the Southwestern Yacht Club and spent many enjoyable hours sailing his yacht around Point Loma and southern California. Jim had a vibrant, magnetic personality and a great sense of humor. He was a compassionate, sensitive and sentimental person who will be remembered as a good, kind, loving man. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Carol Ann; his son, Terry Lee Barnum (Mona); daughter, Sandra Lynn Barnum; his 92 yr. old aunt, Esther Morris; cousins, Maynard Morris, Patricia Kennedy, Julie Barnum Kolasinski and many other Barnum cousins across the country. Military services will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
