Notes for Gladys I. BARNUM


From the Petoskey News, Michigan: Gladys I. Wertman, 106, of Charlevoix, died Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at Boulder Park Terrace Nursing Home in Charlevoix, Michigan. Her funeral took place at 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19, at the Barnard United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rap Posnick officiated and burial followed in Barnard Cemetery.
Gladys was born September 20, 1904, in Castleton Township, near Hastings, the daughter of Royal and Diana (Payne) Barnum. She graduated from Hastings High School.
In 1924, she married Howard Holdren, and in 1925, they moved to San Bernardino, Calif. Gladys enjoyed gardening, and oil painting. She was an Avon representative, and the leader of the Muscoy Kitchen Band. She and Howard were members of the Muscoy Riding Club, and participated in Rose Bowl parades. Howard passed away in 1961. In 1979, Gladys moved to Charlevoix, where she married Myron Wertman, and he preceded her in death in 1983. She was a member of the Barnard United Methodist Church.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Joyce E. (John) Zwierzynski of Grand Rapids; granddaughter, April (Skip) Byrem of Cherry Valley, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Valerie Pitteroff, Blair Byrem, and Brad Byrem all of Cherry Valley, Calif.; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Gladys was also preceded in death by her brothers, Floyd and Shirley Barnum, and sisters, Gertrude Barnum, Hazel Snyder, and Letha Prichard.
