A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname

Notes for Henry Foster BARNUM

He was enumerated as Henry T. Barnum in the US Census returns of 1900, 1910 and 1930; in 1920 and 1940 he was shown simply as Henry Barnum. His grand nephew Henry Foster Barnum claims him as a namesake and says that his full name was also Henry Foster Barnum. Henry's family called him Junior because his first name was the same as that of his grandfather, Henry Tracey Barnum, and it might be that some members of his family thought his middle name was also Tracey. That would suggest a reason for T appearing as his middle initial in several census enumerations.
