Notes for James Kendrick BARNUM


James Kendrick Barnum’s birth record calls him Kendrick B. Barnum, born in San Bernardino on February 7, 1918, son of John Harold and Flora Hutchings Barnum. All other records found refer to him as James Kendrick Barnum. He died in Fresno September 11, 1987. In 1940, he married Barbara Joan Ames who was born December 8, 1917 and died in Paso Robles July 28, 2002. They had two children.
From the Fresno Bee, Fresno, California, September 13, 1987: Services for James Kendrick Barnum, 69, a longtime Fresno attorney with a distinguished record of service in community affairs, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. James Episcopal Church in Fresno. Mr. Barnum died Friday. Born in San Bernardino, Mr. Barnum moved to Fresno in 1946. A 1942 graduate of Stanford University Law School, Mr. Barnum joined the Navy and was accepted by the California Bar Association at special ceremonies in Massachusetts. He then entered the Navy's supply school at Harvard University.
After five years of naval service, he moved to Fresno to practice law for the legal firm of Stammer and McKnight. He was made a partner of the law firm in 1954.
Mr. Barnum was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, now called the Jaycees, joining the organization in 1946. After two years he was elected to the board of directors and in 1951 he was elected president. He also served two terms as vice president of the Jaycees. He was given the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding records of achievement to the Jaycees and the community.
A past treasurer of the state bar, Mr. Barnum was also past president of the Fresno County Bar Association and the Fresno County and City Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Fresno Metropolitan Government Study Committee and the Independent Veterans Committee for the Hoover Report. He was on the board of directors of the Fresno County Heart Association and on the executive committee of the Fresno Citizens Committee for Community Development. Mr. Barnum was a member of the governing board of St. James Episcopal Church and a chancellor for the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin.
He also was a member of the San Joaquin Valley Rose Association.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Barnum of Fresno; a daughter, Ann Barnum Sefton of Paso Robles; a son, James R. Barnum of Mountain View; and three grandchildren.
