Notes for Orrin Edward BARNUM


Obituary from an unidentified contemporary newspaper: Orrin “Bud” Edward Barnum, 90, of Park Rapids, MN, formerly of Nevis, MN, died on Monday, September 26, 2016 at CHI St. Joseph’s Area Health Services in Park Rapids.
    
Orrin was born on April 17, 1926, at Chisago City, MN; the son of Charles Earl and Ada Grace (Doll) Barnum. His early childhood was spent at Chisago City and later childhood through high school was spent at Glencoe, MN, graduating in 1944. He enlisted into the United States Navy in 1944. Following naval training school at Farragut, ID, he served World War II sea duty on the troop transport USS McCracken and later the mine sweeper USS Pivot. He was honorably discharged following the war in 1946. 
    
He attended Bemidji State College and Mankato State College, graduating in 1950 with a teaching degree. His teaching positions brought him to several Minnesota schools – Little Fork, Baudette, Bemidji and Minneapolis, retiring in 1986. 
    
He was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Reithmaier at Arnolds Park, IA, in 1961. Following their retirement they moved to Nevis, and later to Park Rapids.
    
Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and golfing. He was a 50 year member of the Masons, Shriners, and the Eastern Star. He has been a longtime active member of the Nevis Church of Christ. It is notable to mention he was a charter team member on the first Bemidji State College hockey team. 
    
He is survived by his spouse: Beverly A. Barnum of Park Rapids; his children:  David (Mary Lou) Barnum of Nevis, Scott (Melinda) Barnum of Bloomington, MN, Lynn (Steve) Hanson of Eagen, MN, Holly (Brad) Finer of Bloomington, Mark (Gilda) Barnum of Columbia Heights, MN, Bruce (Stacy) Barnum of St. Paul, MN, Lance (Jody) Barnum of Park Rapids and Matthew (Sarah) Barnum of Isanti, MN; 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
    
He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles and Ada; and two brothers: Charles E. and Lowell D. Barnum.
