Notes for David Leland BARNUM


From the St. Louis Dispatch, Missouri, March 24, 2001: David L. Barnum, a retired vice president with Lumex Inc., died of leukemia March 17, 2001, while vacationing in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was 79 and lived in Olivette. A native of Woburn, Mass., Mr. Barnum attended Northeastern University in Boston and Bridgewater State Teachers College in Bridgewater, Mass. Mr. Barnum joined the Army Air Forces and served more than three years in Africa and Italy in World War II. Mr. Barnum then began his career in medical product sales with companies in Vermont and New York. In 1962, he began working in Atlanta for Lumex, a medical equipment manufacturing company based in Long Island, N.Y. Mr. Barnum and his wife, Barbara Meltzer Barnum, moved to St. Louis in 1973, but he continued to work for Lumex. Mr. Barnum became vice president of sales at Lumex in 1984. He retired in 1989. Mr. Barnum was a past president of the Mid-South District and the Metropolitan New York District of the Unitarian Universalist Association. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. March 31 at the First Unitarian Church, 5007 Waterman Boulevard. The body was cremated. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Carol Barnum of Atlanta and Sandra Sermos of Olivette; two sons, Joshua Barnum of Denver and Christopher Barnum of Newark, Del.; and five grandchildren.
