A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
From the Daily Press, Utica, New York, May 14, 1959: Frank T. Barnum, 74, of 100 Genesee St., New Hartford, died May 13, 1959, at his home after a short illness. He was born in Boonville, September 1, 1884, son of Eugene E. and Jane (Jennie) McCann Barnum. At an early age he moved to Albany where he attended Albany schools and was graduated from the Christian Brothers School there. He first came to Utica in 1909 and managed Doyle-Knower Clothing Store. He later owned and operated Hotel Osgood in Ilion, from 1915 to 1917, when he returned to Utica to work for Mahar Brothers clothing store. He later joined the Utica Uniform Co. where he was employed for 25 years. He retired as sales manager in April 1959. Mr. Barnum was well known in local musical circles for his oratorio and concert work, church work and at one time was bass soloist with the Utica Haydn male chorus.
He married Isabelle Virkler of Croghan, Oct. 21, 1913, in St. Francis de Sales Church by the late Rt. Rev. Monsignor Daniel Doody. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, New Hartford and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Republican Club of New Hartford.
Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Mrs. June B. Broughton of Potsdam; two grandchildren, Miss Megan Broughton and Thaddeus Broughton, both of Potsdam; two nieces, Mrs. Woodrow Strife, Croghan, and Mrs. Neil Lagrow, Whitesboro; a nephew, Frater Richard Giles, O.F.M., Washington, D. C, and several cousins.
Two sons died, Paul T. Barnum in infancy, and Thad Barnum on October 19, 1940 in an auto accident.
The funeral will be at 10:15 Saturday from his home and at 10:30 from St. John the
Evangelist Church, where a requiem high Mass will be offered. Burial will be in Boonville.
