A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
From The Hawarden Independent, Iowa, January 12, 1933: The Fennimore Wisconsin Times published the following obituary of Mrs. Jennie Selby, sister of E. Barnum of this city, who passed away Dec. 17th at Lafayette, Indiana. The remains were returned to Fennimore and Mr. Barnum attended the funeral there.
Jennie Barnum Selby, daughter of D. F. and Derinda Barnum, was born in Fennimore Township, now Mt. Ida, September 4, 1861, and passed away at the state soldiers’ home at Lafayette, Ind., Dec. 17, 1932.
She was married to Alonzo Selby at Werley, Wis., Feb. 25, 1900. Mrs. Selby was converted at a Methodist revival at the Gap school house and later on became a Free Methodist at a tent meeting at Werley. In 1904, Mr. and Mrs. Selby moved to Riverside Ferry near Mt. Vernon, Washington state. In 1911 they moved to Sawtelle, Calif., living there until 1919, when they went to live in the soldiers’ home at Lafayette, Ind., due to poor health of both of them. Mr. Selby passed away and was buried at Danville national cemetery in July, 1923.
Wherever Mrs. Selby lived, her health permitting, she always took an active part in church and Sunday school. Mrs. Selby is survived by one sister, Mrs. Dan Streeter of Fennimore, and one brother, Ell Barnum of Hawarden, Iowa, seven nieces and four nephews. Her father, mother and sister Minnie preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at the Daniel Streeter home, Dec. 21. Don Streeter, a nephew, of Joliet, Illinois, accompanied the body here. Rev. Sanford officiated, text Rev. 21, it being her wish.
