From The Hawarden Independent, Iowa, Thursday, November 6, 1930: Mrs. Ell Barnum, a resident of this city for 31 years, passed away at the Hawarden hospital at 1:15 Wednesday (November 5) afternoon from pneumonia. Mrs. Barnum was removed to the hospital Sunday when she suffered an attack of pleurisy and later pneumonia developed. She had suffered two previous attacks of pneumonia and was unable to combat with the ravages of the disease this time.
Funeral services will be held at the Ross Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon and at the Methodist church at 2:30 with Rev. Robt, H. Forrester, the pastor, in charge.
Sarah Cooper was born Nov. 10, 1866, at Mount Ida, Wisconsin and passed away in Hawarden Nov. 5, 1930, lacking but a few days of being 64 years of age. She moved to South Dakota when a child with her parents and settled on the Brule Bottom in Union county. The family returned to Wisconsin three years later because of the devastation caused by the grasshoppers in this section at that time. In November, 1883, she was united in marriage with Ell Barnum at Mount Ida and in 1899 the family came to Hawarden, locating in the eastern part of the city. She made her home continuously in this city since that time.
