She immigrated to the US in 1923.
From an unidentified contemporary newspaper: On Tuesday, February 19, 2013, Sybil “Nana” Nyla Barnum, joined her husband Cyril, son Stanley, granddaughter Lisa Marie, and other departed loved ones in the presence of our Heavenly Father following a hospitalization in Fargo, ND.
Sybil Hardie was born on January 5, 1928, in White Rock, SD. Sybil grew up on a farm near Fairmount, ND. As the third of 10 children, she and her siblings were emblematic of a true family farm, as each of the children contributed to the daily chores required to sustain a living. At 18, Sybil enrolled at Ellendale Teacher’s College, during which time she met the love of her life, Cyril. The two began their life together and Sybil left teaching to raise their six children, born to the happy couple in just 7 years. They moved to Fargo and in 1960 to Moorhead, MN, their final resting home.
A devoted Christian, Jesus was Sybil’s friend, and she shared that relationship with her family. Prayer and daily devotions drew the family close, as did music, with Dad playing guitar, Mom her piano, and six other choral members all bonding in song.
Always given to make the most of each day, Sybil loved to live life to the fullest. She was quick to play practical jokes and wield her wonderful wit. The consummate host, you could always expect to be offered a warm cup of coffee, food, and good laugh if you visited the Barnum home. As her children grew, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren became her central focus and they loved her as dearly as she loved them.
Sybil is survived by her children, Jim Barnum (Lynne), and children, Tami (Scott), Shannon and Tori (Traci); Lonny Barnum (Lorie), and children, Jason, Spencer and Anmarie; Pam Keenan, and children, Shawn and Hali Jo (Christopher); Jerry Barnum (Debra), and children, Justin (Sarah) and Jessie; Linda Carter (Tom); and Stanley’s sons, Michael, Aaron and Christian; great-grandchildren, Billy, Cameron, Keah, Mari, Oscar, and Sam; brother, Charlie (Joan) Hardie; and sisters, Doris (Tom) Pulford, Ardie (Rodney) Voss, Janie (Bob) Anderson and Laurel (Royce) Hanson.
She was greeted in Heaven by her husband, Cyril; her son, Stanley; granddaughter, Lisa Marie; her parents, Hattie and Wallace; and siblings, Lois Mae, Marlys, Richard, and Vonnie
