Schuyler Theodore Barnum, known as "Ted" Barnum, died September 1, 2005 at his home.
Schuyler T. Barnum was born December 16, 1931 in Durham, NC, the son of Theodore and Helen (Hall) Barnum. The family moved to Lansing and then to Kalamazoo where he graduated from State High in 1950. He continued his education at WMU where he received his Bachelor and Masters degrees.
Ted pursued a military career spanning 43 years in the Michigan National Guard and Army Reserves. LTC US Army - Korea, Vietnam and Persian Gulf.
On May 25, 1957 at St. Augustine in Kalamazoo, he was united in marriage with Rosemary (Sullivan) Barnum. He began his teaching career at Gobles Public Schools and then went to St. Augustine elementary school. Following his career in education, he continued his military service at the Ft. Custer Training Center in Battle Creek and retired in 1991. Ted continued working part-time as a Lobby Assistant at the Firth Third Bank in downtown Kalamazoo.
He held life memberships in the Michigan Education Association (MEA) and the Retired Officers Association.
Surviving along with his wife of 48 years were two sons: Stephen (Galyn) Barnum of Portage, and Jim (Kris) Barnum of Portage; four grandchildren: Trevor, Tyler, Stephen and Ashley Barnum all of Portage; a sister, Nancy (Gaylord) Russell of Kalamazoo and their sons, Mark and Jeff; two sisters-in law: Dr. Barbara J. Sullivan of Kalamazoo, and Sr. Marilyn Sullivan, SSJ of Nazareth; one brother-in-law, Bishop James Sullivan of Fargo, ND; and numerous very special God children.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Interment followed at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with full military honors.
