On 16 Nov 1931 Phineas Taylor Barnum of New Jersey filed Civil War pension application number 1706.806. Although the form suggests Civil War service, this is the same person who served in the 42nd Company, U.S. Coast Artillery. Certificate number A-3-25-32 was issued.
A Death Certificate for Phineas T. Barnum issued at Little York, Camden, New Jersey, No. 1508, shows that he died 29 Dec 1933 of apoplexy. Born July 1, 1875, in New York. Wife Eva E. Barnum of Camden, New Jersey. Mother Margaret A. Gurnee. Father Wm. Barnum. Buried at National Cemetery, Beverly N.J.
His gravestone reads: Phineas T. Barnum; New Jersey; Pvt; Coast Art Corps; Sp-Am War; Dec 29 1933.

According to his U.S. National Cemetery Interment Control Form, he was a Private in the 42nd New York Coast Artillery Corps. The notation Spanish War Vet. on the form has been crossed out. He enlisted 12 Oct 1901 and was discharge 19 Oct 1903.
