Notes for Leonard J. BURNHAM

In the US Census of 1940 Leonard was enumerated as an "inmate" at "Eloise". Eloise was a large hospital complex located in Nankin Township in western Wayne County, Michigan. The name came from the post office on the grounds which opened on 20 July 1894 and was named Eloise after a daughter of the postmaster of Detroit. It operated from 1839 to early 1984. Eloise began as a poorhouse and farm but later developed into an asylum and hospital. In 1832 it was called the Wayne County Poorhouse; in 1872 it was the Wayne County Alms House; in 1886 it was referred to simply as the Wayne County House. By 1913 there were three divisions: The Eloise Hospital (Mental Hospital), the Eloise Infirmary (Poorhouse) and the Eloise Sanitarium (T.B. Hospital) which were collectively called Eloise. In 1945 it was re-named "Wayne County General Hospital and Infirmary at Eloise, Michigan". Family lore suggests that Leonard died there sometime after the 1940 census.
