Barnum, 79, resident of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota died Saturday, November 6, 2010 at his residence surrounded by his loving family and under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Funeral Services for Lowell will be held Saturday, November 13 at 1:00 PM in First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 12, 2010 at First Lutheran Church from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to services on Saturday. Interment will be held at Glencoe City Cemetery, Glencoe, Minnesota on Monday, November 15th at 1:00 PM. Lowell was born November 1, 1931 in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin to Charles and Ada (Doll) Barnum. As a young boy he moved with his family to Glencoe, MN. He graduated from Glencoe High School in 1949. After school he assisted at the family drug store. He enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1951. Lowell proudly served his country and was honorably discharged on May 21, 1955. Following his discharge Lowell attended college at NDAC in Fargo, ND earning his degree in Pharmacy. On August 15, 1958 he was united in marriage to Esther Knutson. They lived in Glencoe where Lowell continued to work as a pharmacist in the family drug store. In 1982, they moved to Detroit Lakes and Lowell worked for Dakota Clinic. Esther passed away November 1, 1986. On January 20, 1989, Lowell was united in marriage to Ginny Osterberg. Lowell accepted a position as manager of the Prescription Shop, presently in the Sanford Clinic, and worked until his retirement in 1996. Lowell's passion in life was bowling. He loved participating in league play and socializing with his friends. His other interests included watching a wide variety of sports, reading and tinkering with his metal detector. Lowell and Ginny traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Canada visiting sites and enjoying their retirement years together. Lowell will be deeply missed by his wife, Ginny of Detroit Lakes, two daughters: LynnEtte (Elmer) Mueller of Jackson, MI and Melodie (Eric) Allen of Wilton, MN, five step children: Laurie Sapper of Maple Grove, MN, Julie (Al) Blau of Minneapolis, MN, Sheila (Kelly) Frost of Plymouth, MN, Craig (Stacey) Osten of Richfield, MN and Carrie Ruff of St. Joseph, MN. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, one great grandchild and one brother: Orrin "Bud" (Bev) Barnum of Park Rapids, MN along with several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Esther and his brother Chuck.
