Notes for James R. MCMULLEN

Gravestone inscription: Faithful to his trust, even unto death.

The land for this cemetery was donated in 1881 by an early pioneer of this area named James P. McMullen, to be used as a final resting place for his friends and family. Captain Jim, as he was known (because he served as a captain for the Confederacy during the Civil War), first came to Pinellas County in in early 1840s, squatting on a piece of land near the entrance to the causeway that now spans Tampa Bay. Later, after he left, a settlement was established there called "Bay View," with the spelling subsequently changed to "Bayview."

Captain Jim's six brothers eventually followed him to the area, and together they allegedly boasted as many as 1,000 descendants in the county by 1900. James R. McMullen and his daughter Angeline must have been among them, which is why she and her family are buried there.
