A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
From the Mason City Globe-Gazette, Mason City, Iowa, February 1, 1944: Clear Lake—Ernest T. Cobb, 84, died at a Clear Lake nursing home at 8:30 o'clock Tuesday morning after a brief illness which followed o long period of declining health. He was a pioneer of Cerro Gordo County, having come here from Jackson County by covered wagon in 1865 and enduring all the trials and deprivations of the early days. Mr. Cobb was born Sept. 6, 1859, in Jackson County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cobb. With the exception of 2 years spent In Indiana he had lived in Clear Lake and vicinity since he was 8 years of age. He attended rural school and the Clear Lake School and became a teacher, a vocation he followed in winter months while farming in the summer for about 20 years. For 25 years he was clerk of the Lincoln township school board.
Mr. Cobb recalled that his father's house was built of lumber hauled from Austin, Minn.; wheat was hauled to market at Waverly arid a total eclipse of the sun in 1886. About 1888 Mr. Cobb went to Indiana where he became acquainted with Miss Mary Barnum of Bath and was married there Nov. 5, 1890. The golden wedding was fittingly observed in 1940. Mrs. Cobb died May 17, 1942.
Mr. and Mrs. Cobb came within a month to Lincoln Township and lived on a farm there until 1910 when they moved to town. Mr. Cobb worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker until his eyesight failed several years ago. The Cobbs were affiliated with the United Brethren church in Lincoln Township but later joined the Methodist Church in Clear Lake.
Mr. Cobb is survived by 3 children Mrs. Ray Baker and Kenneth Cobb, Clear Lake, and Mrs. Magnus Johnson, Mason City; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Addie Mason, Pomona, Cal.; Mrs. Alice Brown Mason City, and Mrs. William J. McGowan, Clear Lake.
